Languages at the United Nations

Expand Your Language Skills and Innovate Your Communications

Multilingualism is at the heart of our work at the United Nations. Listening, reading, speaking and writing in more than one language deepens our mutual understanding, broadens our horizons and makes us better international civil servants.

Language learning impacts our daily work.

For stronger recognition of language skills, smoother transitions in career mobility and more efficient management of language programmes, the United Nations has adopted a standard for language learning and assessment, the United Nations Language Framework.

With the UN Language Programmes, staff can learn any of the six official UN languages and local languages in selected duty stations. Join our in-person courses at the Headquarters and at major UN hubs. Or learn from the comfort of your home or office with a wide range of online learning.

Our communications learning opportunities will give you the oral and written communications skills you need to be confident when you prepare presentations, meetings, conversations, emails and reports.
